MIAMI ART WEEK

Course Description & SyllabusAs one of the foremost international art markets, Miami Art Week is a showcase for prominent contemporary artists, dealers, and collectors. The week features a multitude of important fairs – Art Basel Miami Beach, PULSE, Untitled, NADA – that help determine value in the art world, both commercial and social. Students in this course are exposed to an abundance of new work that represents the leading edge of contemporary art. They explore emerging trends, examine how the market influences production, and try to make sense of a complex and ever-changing landscape.

This travel course explores the marketplace from the dueling perspectives of sincere engagement and rigorous critique through the direct exploration of Art Basel Miami Beach, the surrounding art fairs and collecting institutions. Students use this opportunity to situate their artistic and/or curatorial goals in relation to the market. Through readings, research, reflection and critical analysis, students develop an understanding of the benefits and challenges created by the Contemporary Art market.
