	Kate Casanova is an interdisciplinary artist who explores the posthuman through sculpture and video. Casanova has exhibited nationally and internationally at venues such as Yi Gallery (Brooklyn) the Black Cube Nomadic Museum (Denver), and the Weisman Art Museum (Minneapolis). Casanova is represented by Myta Sayo Gallery (Toronto). She received a Master’s of Fine Arts from the University of Minnesota in 2013 and a Bachelor’s of Fine Arts from the Minneapolis College of Art &#38;amp; Design in 2008 and serves as Associate Professor of Sculpture and Director of the School of Art &#38;amp; Art History at the University of Denver.

Human hair can be added to bioplastics to create a composite material with more strength.

Gelatin bioplastic can be formed into sheets and shaped while drying. It can be used to replace resin in many applications.

Jellymold, made from gelatin and glycerin, can be used to make reusable molds or for castings. It is compatible with a polymer modified gypsum used for casting.

The jellymold can also be used as a casting material. It can be poured into plaster molds with a mold release or silicone molds.

Paper clay is adurable and lightweight surface material that can be sanded smooth. The recipe includes paper pulp, joint compound, PVA glue and water. This is the paper clay before sanding.

In the exhibition, Gut Feeling, hyper-tactile sculptures evoke the paradoxical experience of being a body. One can know their own body intimately and yet the inner workings remain utterly mysterious. Organs carry out tasks beneath flesh and microbes flourish in guts without direction from the human in which they inhabit. Even though science provides brilliant explanations of how we function, to occupy a body is to be both at home and amidst an alien landscape. 

Utilizing a wide range of materials - including paper clay, polymer gypsum, vintage fur, fabric and acrylic paint - these abstract sculptures evoke a definition of a body that defies easy categorization. Biomorphic forms - like an unruly intestine or spleen - bulge and coil in defiance of gravity. Sensuous fabrics with pore-like holes are layered over protruding fur. This is a body that is in process and lacks a distinct outside and inside. This hyper-tactility is an invitation to engage the knowledge that resides in the senses and in the materiality of the body. Gut Feeling occupies the space between what can be sensed about one’s own body and what can only be imagined.

The exhibition, Underbelly, explores the materiality of human and non-human bodies. The work uses materials such as plaster, carpet padding, plastic, resin, silicone, fabric and LCD screens to create abstract forms that bulge beyond borders, slide over edges, and seep through cracks. This exhibition holds tension between the bounded form of a body’s perceived exterior and an unknowable interior world; between control and unruliness.Press:

Metabodies is an ongoing series of sculptures beginning in 2016. The sculptures are abstract assemblages of materials such as plaster, resin, foam, thermoformed plastic, and found objects to create forms that evoke the hybridity of bodies and the systems they inhabit. The sculptures are inteneded to feel as if they were shaped by the same forces that shape bodies such as gravity, energy and entropy, as well as societal forces like social media, global industry, and political power.

		<description>DEEP SKIN
Deepskin: an exhibition at Lane Meyer Projects in 2021 as a part of LMP PDA, a program curated by Brooke Tomiello during the pandemic in which an artist presents work in the gallery’s window vitrine every two weeks. In this exhibition, materials that are designed to ornament bodies like fake nails, barbells and gold chain are suspended in gelatinous membranes of bioplastic, eyeshadow and tree moss oil. During the pandemic, bodies became tangled with feelings such as longing, anxiety, desire and repulsion rather than operating as sites of connection, interaction and exchange and so the sculptures embodied that tension.
